Even if we cannot be certain how ghost holes were supposed to work, the deceased’s relatives clearly felt they were important and should be included. At some point a conscious decision was taken to bury or cremate the dead in a certain way and with (or without) certain goods. These decisions would have reflected their religious, cultural or magical beliefs. For example, items are often broken before being placed in cremation urns (but rarely in a grave). This could have represented the ritual ‘death’ of items belonging to or associated with the deceased. The different practices between burial and cremation however remains intriguing.
